The McLaughlin Lab launched this semester at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ, with principal investigator Jess McLaughlin, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, placing ethics at the forefront. McLaughlin is recruiting graduate students for the 2025-26 academic year and is actively thinking about how to prioritize students and local communities.

‘By Alaskans, for Alaskans’: Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ launches the state’s first graduate program in school psychology

Alaska is facing a youth mental health crisis — a situation exacerbated by the lack of services available. In response to this urgent need, Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ will launch the state’s first Master of Science in School Psychology program in fall 2025. Program director Harvey has garnered substantial financial backing, including a $1.3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Special Education.

A partnership between the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ and Seattle University School of Law will establish the new Alaska Hybrid Hub, an innovative initiative to provide aspiring lawyers in Southcentral Alaska with access to a complement of resources of a brick-and-mortar law school.

This summer, Memphis Hill, Ph.D., led a team to collect sediment and water samples from sites near Grewingk Glacier in the hopes of identifying ‘extreme microbes’ — microbes that can survive in extreme environments, like underneath glaciers.

From instant ramen to global success

Retired Global Upside CEO and accounting alumnus Ragu Bhargava will be the keynote speaker at the annual Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ Alumni Homecoming Luncheon in October where he will speak on the theme of being a partner in Alaska’s workforce. In 2022, Bhargava finalized the sale of Global Upside to Safeguard Global, handing over the reins to a company he and his wife Gita started building over 20 years ago.
